*The Old Man and the Sea* by Ernest Hemingway tells the story of Santiago, an old, impoverished fisherman who struggles with a long run of bad luck. Determined to prove his skill, he sets out alone into the Gulf Stream, where he hooks a giant marlin. After a brutal, three-day struggle, Santiago finally catches the fish but is unable to protect it from sharks. By the time he returns to shore, all that remains of the marlin is its skeleton. The story explores themes of perseverance, isolation, and the human struggle against nature.
